The Science Behind Getting 8 Hours of Sleep

Sleep is one of the most important things we need to make sure we are staying healthy! Without enough sleep, not only do you feel tired throughout the day, but it can actually have pretty detrimental effects on your overall health. Doctors recommend getting at least 8 hours every single night, but why is this? Keep reading to see the many benefits of getting at least 8 hours!

Think about how many hours of sleep you get per night. Is it 6? 7? If you’re like us, it might be 8 or 9. Now, think of what an extra hour, or even half hour could do! We know it sounds hard (it already feels like there aren’t enough hours in the day) but we promise just a little bit more could have some amazing benefits.

Here are 3 reasons why you need at least 8 hours:

  • Sleep controls your appetite

    • When you don’t get enough sleep, your body goes into overdrive and acts hungry. This causes overeating, which causes weight gain. Nobody wants that!

  • Sleep helps your immune system function

    • This one is so important with flu season coming up! Your body cannot fight inflammation and infection when you don’t get enough sleep, therefore causing you to get sick more frequently.

  • Sleep helps memory

    • Not only does sleep help you have mental clarity, but it also helps you remember things easier! If you are working or going to school, this is very crucial.

  • The right amount of sleep makes you live longer

    • People who sleep less than 6 or more than 9 hours a night are at a high risk for premature death, which is exactly why 8 hours is the perfect amount!

There are many ways to make sure you are getting enough sleep at night. We like to read a book before we go to bed, turn off all screens at least an hour before, and use our amazing sleep spray! We also sometimes have a cup of tea, which helps us relax.
